Digging Deeper Into The Book of Isaiah

Isaiah is a very important & “weighty” book of the Bible.  Here are a few things I’ve been discovering in my study of this portion of God’s Word.

·         Isaiah is quoted @ 58 times in the NT with 100’s of more allusions.  Along with Psalms & Deuteronomy it is the most quoted OT book.   This is an important book to get to know.

·         Isaiah is considered the prophet of God’s holiness.  His vision of God’s holiness is found not only in the well-known Is 6, but in virtually every part of the book.  Notice especially Is 2:10-22, 37:16, 40:12-26 & 57:15 to name only a few.  The phrase “the holy one” is used 26 times of God in Isaiah (it is used only 7 more times in the rest of the whole OT).  The adjective “holy” is used of God in Isaiah 33 times (this is more than 1/3 of the total times it is used this way in the whole OT).

·         Is says “woe is me” in Is 6:5.   Notice the repetition of this idea in the context in Is 5:8, 11, 16, 18, 20, 21 & 22.

·         The words of God to Isaiah in Is 6:9-10 are repeated in all 4 gospels (Mt 13:1415, Mk 4:10-12, Lk 8:10, Jn 12:39-41), Acts (28:26-27) & Romans (11:8).  This is highly unusual of any text.  We often shy away from the strong doctrine of predestination that Isaiah taught & which was also taught by Jesus & His apostles.  Notice in Is 6 & these other passages that God is fully sovereign – even over salvation – yet He calls His people to show & tell the gospel to those outside.  God is sovereign & yet human beings are also fully responsible.

·         “How long” in Is 6:11 is a lament often found in the Psalms (13:2, 74:10, 79:5, 80:4, 89:46, 94:3; see also Hab 1:2 & Zech 1:12).
