Concl: Digging Deeper into the book of Habakkuk by Pastor Jeff 1. It is impossible to overestimate the importance of this little OT prophetic book. Hab is “minor” in length, but massively “major” in importance. For example Hab 2:4 was not only the most important verse in launching the Protestant Reformation, but was among the most central verses in guiding & shaping the theology of the Apostle Paul (see Rom 1:16-17 & Gal 3:11) & the writer of Hebrews (Heb 10:38). Hab 2:3-4 also connects with other Bible passages such as Gen 15:1-6, 25:4-5, Is 33:6 (“stability” = faithfulness), Ps 33:4. Note also the repetition of terms for “faith” in Num 20:12, 27:14, Dt 1:32, 9:23, 32:51; Ps 106:24 – especially comparing that lack of faith with Abraham’s example in Gen 15:6/ 25:4-5. 2. Hab has many connections with many Psalms, especially Psalms of lament: · “How long” Hab 1:2 with Ps 13:1-4, 89:46-51, 44:22-24, 73:1-3, 12-19, 21-28, 74:1-11 & 19-23, 10:1-13, 22:1-21, Ps 80 & 88; & Lam 5:19-22 · “Why” Hab 1:3 & 13 with Jer 12:1, 9:2-6 & Ps 22:1 3. Note the repetition of “violence” in Hab 1:2, 3, 9, 2:8 & 17 & the same use of this word in Gen 6:10-12 – a word for a wide variety of flagrant violations of God’s ways · see words for law & justice in Hab 1:2-4 & Num 23:21; Dt 4:8, Is 2:3, Am 2:4 & Is 5:7-15 4. Hab is absolutely soaked in almost all of the previous portions of God’s word – many, many more than I can even list. He alludes to virtually all of the major events of salvation history with a focus on creation & the Exodus (Exodus & Psalm language are all over Hab) Here are a few: · There are major connections of Hab (epecially Hab 3) with Ps 77, 18, 68, 95, 107, 136, as well as with Ex 15 & Dt 32-33. See also Jud 5, Ex 16-17, Num 21-25 & many others. · note God’s promise to judge his unbelieving people via the nations – Dt 28:45-65, 5:28-33 · God is everlasting (Hab 1:12 with Dt 33:27, Ps 90:2, 93:2, & Is 40:28), the “Holy One” (Hab 1:12 with Is 12:6, 29 more times in Is, Ps 71:22-23), “LORD” (Hab 1:12 & Ex 3:13-15, 6:2-8 & 100’s of times in the OT), & “Rock” (Hab 1:12 & Dt 32:4, Is 11:3-4, Ps 18:1-3) · “write the revelation, make it plain on tablets” (Hab 2:2 with Dt 1:5 & 27:8. See also Ex 17:14, Jer 30:2, 36:2, Ps 102:18, Ex 31:18, 32:15-16 & Dt 9:10) · “so he may run …(& proclaim/herald)” (Hab 2:2 with Ex 34:6, 1 Sam 4:12, 2 Sam 18:19-27, Jer 51:31; see also Ps 119:32, Is 40:31 & Phil 3:13-14). · God’s timetable (& plans) are different than ours, but His ways are to be waited for (Hab 2:3 with Is 55:8-9, 1 Sam 13:8-15, Heb 10:37, Mal 3:1, Jn 11:5-21, 2 Pet 3:1-10) “wait for it” (Hab 2:3 with Ps 33:20, 106:13, Is 8:17, 30:18, 64:4, Zeph 3:8 5. Hab 3 is filled with “Psalm” terms that show Hab is to be read & sung in community. Note in particular Heb 3:1 “A prayer … according to Shigionoth” (only in Ps 7:1 in rest of Bible). “Selah” in Hab 3: 3, 9, 13 & 71 times in 39 Psalms; “To the choirmaster” & “with stringed instruments” in Hab 3:19 & both many times in Psalms (these 3 last terms occur together only in Hab 3, Ps 4, 54, 55, 61, & 76). There are also many, many “Psalm words” in Hab 3.
