A Fellowship of the Whole Word of God

Discussion questions & ideas for digging deeper into Luke 4:1-13

1.        What amazes you about Jesus’ knowledge of & use of Scripture in Luke 4:1-13? What do you make of His knowledge of Deuteronomy?  How did He get like this?  (note also how often He uses & refers to Scripture in the rest of Lk 4)

2.       What helps you to get the Word of God in your head, heart &/or hands?  Which of these 3 is hardest for you & why?

3.       What are a few of the main enemies of you being in the Word of God?  What seems to get in the way of your spending time in the Scriptures?

4.       How could your life group (or other support group) pray for you to become a better “eater” of the whole Word of God so you become a more Biblically rooted believer?

1.       What improves your appetite & what helps you actually eat & digest the Word?  What can we do to encourage one another in this great endeavor?

2.       What would help you gain a better overall understanding of the whole Bible so you would be a Ps 1:1-3 kind of person?  What plans do you need to make to help you move in that direction?

3.       What question(s) would you like to ask based on your reading of Lk 4:1-13?

4.       In your life group (or other support group), spend some time in prayer based on this passage of Scripture & theme – pray especially that we would grow as Bible-saturated people of God.

5.       I (Pastor Jeff) suggest that there are 3 main ways to learn from this key passage.

a)      The 1st is the one I focus on in my preaching today – namely Jesus model as a Bible-saturated man of God.  See questions above on this.

b)      The 2nd is to learn from Jesus’ example in this text about how we might more effectively fight temptation.  Here are some questions on this theme:

·         What is the essence of each of the 3 temptations in Lk 4:1-13?  Which of these do you struggle with the most & why?  What can we learn from how Jesus fights sin & the devil in this passage?

·         What can we do to better support one another in this “fight of faith” so that we have God’s power & strength to defeat the evil false trinity of “the world, the flesh & the devil”.

c)      The 3rd is to notice that the Jesus we examine in this text is not mainly our example (which is 2ndary), but is primarily God the Son to worship.  The main point of Lk 4:1-13 is not to follow Jesus example as much as it is to fall down before Him in extravagant worship & stunned amazement.  Here are some questions on this theme:

·         What impresses you about Jesus in Luke 4:1-13 & context?  Make & discuss a “top 5” list (or more).

·         How does “seeing & savoring” the glories of Jesus Christ in this passage itself free us from temptation & sin & for holiness? (or does it?)

·         How does gazing on the beauties & glories you see in Jesus in this passage help you to grow us as extravagant worshippers of God?
